Who can vote in which sort of election?

  • For local Council elections, voters can be EU Citizens
  • For General Elections, voters must be UK Citizens. 

How do you register to vote?

You can register in just three minutes by going to www.gov.uk/register-to-vote – you will need your National Insurance number.

How much does it cost to register to vote?

Registering to vote is free but if you fail to register to vote, you could face an £80 fine.

I know I was on the electoral register before. Does this mean I don’t have to register?

Not necessarily. The new system means around one million people who are currently
registered will be knocked off. The only way to ensure you are registered to vote is to
register again at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

How old do you have to be to register to vote?

You can register to vote when you are 16 years old
You can vote when you are 18 years old
